Clegg Impact Soil Tester
Affordable, Portable and Easy-to-Use
The Clegg Impact Soil Tester
  • Measures the hardness (compaction) of natural and synthetic playing fields
  • Rapidly scans large areas
  • Quickly checks for variations during construction

  • Identifies the moisture levels of soils

  • Enables monitoring of changes over time

This very efficient impact testing device measures the "stiffness" of natural or constructed soil conditions. A known mass, the Clegg Hammer, drops from a fixed distance and deceleration is measured as it hits the ground. Four successive trials provide the Clegg Impact Value which correlates directly with the California Bearing Ratio, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) #5874, the Texas Class Number, r-value, and Elastic Modulus.

How the Clegg Impact Soil Tester Works

The Clegg tests the full range of soils and soft rocks typically encountered during construction of flexible pavements and earthworks. It is perfect for measuring peak strength because it requires no weighing or drying. It is quick (each test is 30 seconds or less) and easy to use and requires minimal training. For sports surfaces, the Clegg is the "instrument of choice" for natural and artificial turf (ASTM #F1702-96). Use it for horse racing, football, soccer, golf or wherever soil hardness needs to be controlled for safety or playability.

Hammer weights include:
0.50 kg hammer  model 95048
2.25 kg hammer  model 95049
4.50 kg hammer  model 95050
20.0 kg hammer  model 95051

Recommended Use:
- Surface cushion (grass)
- Sports applications (compaction)
- General soil compaction
- Road construction (compaction)
